Alfie: Chinese Crested x Shih Tzu

Alfie has been REHOMED

Alfie is a compact 10kg of gorgeously hairy dog who is looking for a new home due to the sudden passing of his beloved owner. Alfie is being fostered out of our usual area and is currently in St Albans in Hertfordshire so we would ideally like to rehome him within an hour’s drive of the AL1 postcode.

Alfie loves his walks, is clean and quiet in the house and happy to be lifted into the car for short journeys; apparently he used to be travel sick but he’s been going on short journeys up to half an hour every day with his foster family and he hasn’t shown any sign of nausea.

Needing a good walk every day, Alfie can run 5km but likes to stop for a sniff regularly. His fitness has vastly improved in his foster home and we would like him to have a home where his walking is maintained at the current level. His recall is vastly improving but he will still need treats to reward his recall until he is 100%, however he won’t run off as he likes to keep his people in sight and is learning the ‘Wait’ command well. He is very friendly and playful with other dogs but can get a bit over excited wanting to run up to every dog to say hello, and will screech if he’s not allowed to, so this is a work in progress!

A friendly lad, he enjoys a fuss but on his own terms as he has his own boundaries, however bribing him to do something he isn’t keen on usually works! He doesn’t like being handled unexpectedly and will show his discomfort, possibly due to previous treatment, but he responds well when talking to him before handling and shows no aggression, just makes sure that you know he doesn’t like being pulled about without warning, on the other hand he really likes affection and fuss, especially robust, full body scratches. He seems to appreciate communication and “frank” interaction in that way.

During play he enjoys a game of fetch, when he’s relaxing he sometimes sucks his fleece, he can also become a little ‘over-friendly’ with his bed, but never anything else (your legs are safe!). He does like the safety and stability of sleeping with his people, he always slept with his previous owner and he does with his foster family. He loves bedtime and jumps into his place in the bottom corner or snuggles alongside, and is no trouble at all throughout the night.

Alfie would like someone around for most of the day as he wouldn’t like to be left entirely alone, he howls sometimes when alone in a room, even if you’re in the house, although this is improving. We think he’d be much happier with another dog for company.

He would be really happy with fairly active, outdoorsy people, is good with horses. He chases rabbits and follows scents, but he may well be able to live with a confident cat, however a home without young children is required.

He will need regular clipping and brushing in between, particularly his tail, so please bear these costs in mind before submitting an application.

Alfie is 7 years old, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated.

If you are interested in offering Alfie a home, please complete our online Adoption Form.
